近代工作機械の元祖となる、モーズレイの鉄製ねじ切り旋盤が作られたのは1797年とされる。本機は、それ以前に製作の木工旋盤である。足踏み装置やはずみ車がなく、ひもの一端を竿に、もう一端を踏み台に結びつけて、人力で駆動させるポール旋盤（さお旋盤）と呼ばれるもので、当コレクションで最も歴史ある工作機械である。

It is reported that Moseley, the originator of modern machine tools, made his iron thread cutting lathe in 1797. This machine is a woodworking lathe manufactured before that year. This lathe does not have any treadle device or flywheel attached to the device. One end of a string was tied to a pole and the other end was tied to a separate treadle. For this reason, it is called a human-powered pole lathe. This is the oldest machine tool in this museum.
